Franchise 3: ‘Lucky’

LUCKY

I grew up in NJ. We moved around a lot but whether it was Long Branch, Asbury Park, or Seaside the shore was always within reach. Major moments in my life played out in beach towns and on boardwalks so when Hurricane Sandy hit I watched pieces of my childhood and youth slip beneath the rising tide, never to resurface.

Curated by Scott Listfield and hosted at Gallery1988, ‘Franchise 3’ asked artists to create work about the franchises that shaped them. The nostalgia and memories tied to stores and commercial spaces. Given the Listfieldian astronaut surveying abandoned, dystopian locales indicative of the Franchise shows, it seemed fitting to imagine my beloved boardwalks in the future, ravaged by storms – a spectre of destruction presiding over the remains.

My thanks to Scott for inviting me to take part. It was a rare chance to pursue an uncommon and exciting conceptual process.

The regular edition is printed on Astrobrights Orbit Orange color stock, and the variant on Colorplan New Blue. These 18×24″ screen prints are hand signed and numbered and feature a diamond flake ink.
